Diaphora presents: Elcor Hamlet

Last month, on November 7, we released the pilot episode of Diaphora: Elcor Hamlet and met with great success! We couldn’t have done it with our great ensemble on that merry N7 Day! Diaphora couldn’t have started in a better way.

Every episode of Diaphora features a whole new story and sometimes something we experimented with. Due to the monotone deliveries of all the lines, tweaking the actors’ voices was relatively simple, so I could focus on cutting the dialogue and the settings. Coming from editing fantasy audio dramas with lots of different performances and details, this was a welcoming change of pace.

Working on the setting for each scene was the toughest part. The opening scene is my favorite, from the crunchy footsteps to the howling wind when the Ghost appeared. Other scenes merely had a change of reverb settings and ambient noise. To break that subtle difference between scenes, I put Hamlet’s encounter in a courtyard with a fountain. I know, it took place in the middle of winter, so it was an indoor fountain like the ones you see at the mall.

Writing the story itself took some cleverness. The script of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is widely available online. All me and the missus had to do was cut it down to the very core of the story and add any emotional announcements to sentences we felt needed them (because that’s how Elcor speak).

Then we held our very first casting call and we received many talented auditions from fans of all walks. It felt amazing! I even discovered a new podcast that I now listen to through these auditions.

Working on our own podcast still poses many challenges, but we learn with every episode we put out. But most of all, we have fun doing it!
